Both connect fine to Surveillance Station or QVR Pro -- the real tradeoffs are about installation, reliability, and a piece of hardware many first-time buyers forget to budget for.
Every camera page on this site notes whether a camera is PoE (Power over Ethernet), Wi-Fi, or both, and PoE cameras additionally list which PoE class they need -- see the Methodology page and each camera's own spec badges for what those classes mean. For a NAS-connected surveillance install specifically, the choice matters more than it might for a single standalone camera.
A PoE camera receives both power and network data over a single Ethernet run, eliminating a separate power adapter and outlet near each camera -- a real advantage for cameras mounted outdoors, on eaves, or anywhere routing a power cord is awkward or unsightly. It's also generally the more reliable choice for a system you want recording continuously: a wired connection doesn't compete for airtime with your household Wi-Fi, drop out from interference, or need re-pairing after a router reboot.
The catch, and the thing first-time buyers most often miss: your NAS itself is not a PoE power source. Unless you're using a PoE-capable network switch or standalone PoE injectors, PoE cameras still need something to actually supply that power, which is a real added cost and a real added purchase most buying guides for the cameras themselves don't mention. Check the specific PoE class a camera needs (802.3af/at/bt) against what your switch or injector can supply -- see the "PoE" glossary entry on either camera database for what each class provides and which cameras (heaters, motorized zoom, strong IR arrays) tend to need the higher-power classes.
A Wi-Fi camera skips the cabling question entirely, which matters most for a retrofit install where running Ethernet to every camera location isn't practical -- an older building, a rental, a detached structure without existing wiring. The tradeoff is dependence on wireless signal strength and reliability at each camera's exact mounting location, which can be inconsistent for outdoor or far-from-the-router placements, and most Wi-Fi cameras still need a nearby power outlet unless they're battery-powered (a separate category with its own retention/recording tradeoffs this guide doesn't cover).
For a small number of cameras near an existing router, or a genuine retrofit where cabling isn't realistic, Wi-Fi is a fine and much simpler choice. For a larger install, anything mounted outdoors or far from the router, or any camera you want recording reliably around the clock, PoE is generally the safer bet -- just remember to price in a PoE switch or injectors alongside the cameras themselves, not just the cameras.
